1.7. Start of the engine

GENERAL INFORMATION

The ignition switch with blocking of a steering wheel

The switch of ignition is connected to blocking of a steering wheel. Is on the right side of a steering column.

The key in the switch of ignition can hold four designated positions:

About – ignition is switched off, the steering wheel is blocked; for unblocking of a steering wheel it is necessary to insert a key and to turn it clockwise, slightly turning a wheel for simplification of an exit of the blocking stopper to the right and to the left;

I – ignition is switched off, the steering wheel is unblocked; in this situation it is possible to turn on the automobile radio receiver;

II – ignition is included, all electric chains are powered; in case of towage of the car the key should be established in this situation (it is impossible to leave for a long time a key in this situation at the idle engine as it can lead to failure of the coil of ignition);

III – the starter is included; the turn of a key in this situation demands overcoming resistance of a returnable spring. The key does not remain in this situation. After easing of rotary effort itself comes back to situation "II" (the starter is switched off).


Prevention

The mechanism of the switch of ignition does not give the chance to include a starter at the working engine (it threatens with damage of a starter and gear wreath on an engine flywheel). For inclusion of a starter it is necessary to turn at first a key in situation "I" (and consequently, to switch off ignition and the engine if it worked) and again to turn a key in situation "III".


Start of the cold engine

For check of a thermal condition of the engine it is necessary to turn the ignition key in situation "I" and about 30 seconds later to look at the index of temperature of cooling liquid. If his shooter remained in extreme left situation, then the engine cold and it should be started as it is described below. If the engine warm, it is necessary to follow the instructions given below.

During start of the engine the emergency brake has to be tightened, and the lever of gear shifting has to be in neutral situation.

In cars with the mechanical transmission before inclusion of a starter it is necessary to press a coupling pedal against the stop and to keep it in this situation.

THE ENGINES EQUIPPED WITH THE CARBURETTOR WITH THE CHANGEABLE SECTION OF THE DIFFUSER

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Not to press an accelerator pedal. Motorcraft with the changeable section of the diffuser has the automatic device of start and adapts to engine temperature.
2. To include a starter. If the engine is not started within 10 seconds, then to turn a key in situation "I", to wait several seconds and again to include a starter.

Prevention

During start of the engine it is not necessary to press an accelerator pedal.


3. If the engine is still not started, to wait about 10 more seconds and then to arrive according to the instructions given below.
4. After start of the engine at once to weaken effort to a key which will return to situation "II".

THE ENGINES EQUIPPED WITH OTHER TYPES OF CARBURETTORS WITH THE AUTOMATIC STARTING ARRANGEMENT

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. For start of the automatic starting arrangement of the carburetor it is necessary to squeeze out slowly two times completely an accelerator pedal (against the stop) and to freely release it.
2. To include a starter (a key in situation "III". If the engine is not started within 10 seconds, then it is necessary to turn a key in situation "I", to wait several seconds and once again to include a starter.

Prevention

During start of a starter it is not necessary to press an accelerator pedal.


3. After three unsuccessful attempts of start of the engine it is necessary to wait about 10 seconds and to arrive according to the instructions given below.
4. After start of the engine at once to weaken effort to a key which will return to situation "II".
5. If the started engine decays, then it is necessary to repeat actions for start of the engine, at first having slowly pressed and having released an accelerator pedal.

THE ENGINES EQUIPPED WITH OTHER TYPES OF CARBURETTORS WITH THE STARTING ARRANGEMENT OPERATED MANUALLY

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. To extend against the stop the lever of the starting arrangement of the carburetor. Once slowly to press and release an accelerator pedal (not to press it later in the course of start of the engine).
2. To include a starter (a key in situation "III". If the engine is not started within 10 seconds, then it is necessary to turn a key in situation "I", to wait several seconds and once again to include a starter.

Prevention

During start of a starter it is not necessary to press an accelerator pedal.


3. If after the second attempt the engine is not started, it is necessary to wait about 10 seconds and to arrive according to the instructions given below.
4. After start of the engine at once to weaken effort to a key which will return to situation "II". In process of warming up of the engine gradually to move the lever of the starting arrangement of the carburetor, ensuring uniform functioning of the engine. Start of the warm petrol engine.
5. To press an accelerator pedal to a half of its course and to hold it in this situation.
6. To include a starter. After start of the engine at once to weaken efforts to a key and to an accelerator pedal.
7. If the engine is not started after three attempts, then most likely it is filled in with fuel (in its cylinders there is a mix which is too enriched with fuel).

Start of the warm petrol engine

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. To press an accelerator pedal to a half of its course and to hold it in this situation.
2. To include a starter. After start of the engine at once to weaken efforts to a key and to an accelerator pedal
3. If the engine is not started after three attempts, then most likely it is filled in with fuel (in its cylinders there is a mix which is too enriched with fuel). It is necessary to arrive according to the instructions given below.

Start of the petrol engine which is filled in with fuel

PERFORMANCE ORDER
To slowly press an accelerator pedal against the stop, to hold it in this situation and to include a starter. After start of the engine it is necessary to weaken slowly effort to an accelerator pedal in process of increase in speed of the engine.

Start of the diesel engine

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. To turn the ignition key in situation "II". The control bulb of inclusion of glow plugs lights up.
2. To wait, the control bulb of inclusion of glow plugs will not go out yet.
3. To press against the stop an accelerator pedal.

Prevention

At low ambient temperatures for simplification of start before inclusion of a starter it is necessary to press a coupling pedal to switch-off the transmission containing the thickened oil.


4. To include a starter.
5. If the engine is not started within about 20 seconds, then it is necessary to turn a key in situation "I", to wait a little and to repeat start of the engine.

Prevention

In case of impossibility of start of the engine because of lack of fuel, after filling of a tank with fuel it is necessary to remove air from fuel system (see subsection 2.8).


Start of the engine by means of the additional accumulator

Connection of the additional accumulator for start of the engine

1–4 – order of connection of wires.

If the accumulator of the car is discharged, then it is possible to start the engine, having connected another, charged accumulator.

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. To connect the plug (+) the additional accumulator (V) to the plug (+) the car accumulator by means of a special starting wire (the corresponding section).
2. To connect plug(s) of both accumulators the second starting wire.

Prevention

At first it is necessary to connect wires to the additional accumulator in order to avoid sparking in case of a casual touch the wire plug to the mass of the car.


3. It is not necessary to switch-off the additional accumulator at once after start of the engine when it works at the raised idling turns. It is necessary to wait until the engine heats up and will begin to work at normal turns of idling.
